Protect your feet with Diabetic Shoes

If you’re living with diabetes, the right pair of shoes can do far more than keep you comfortable, they can help protect your feet from the serious complications diabetes can cause. At Ferro Foot & Ankle, we now offer diabetic shoes for patients who need extra protection, so you have one more way to stay active, safe, and on your feet. You’re more than a patient, you’re family, and we’re here to help every step of the way.

What Are Diabetic Shoes?

Diabetic shoes are specially designed footwear made to protect the feet of people living with diabetes, particularly those experiencing complications like nerve damage or poor circulation. Unlike regular shoes, they’re built to reduce pressure points, accommodate changes and deformities in the foot, and protect sensitive skin.

For patients with diabetes, small problems can turn into serious ones. Nerve damage (neuropathy) can make it hard to feel a blister or sore, and poor blood flow can slow healing. Diabetic shoes, along with properly fitted inserts, help offload the pressure that can lead to wounds over time, lowering the risk of ulcerations and infections and helping you keep doing the things you love.

How Diabetic Shoes Are Different

Diabetic shoes are built with features you won’t find in an ordinary pair:

  • Smooth, stitch-free linings: The inside of the shoe is smooth to prevent the friction and rubbing that cause blisters, which can be dangerous for diabetic feet.

  • A wider, deeper toe box: Extra width and depth make room for swelling and comfortably accommodate deformities such as bunions or hammer toes, so nothing rubs or crowds your toes.

  • Custom inserts that offload pressure: Fitted inserts help redistribute pressure across the foot and protect the areas most prone to wounds.

  • A lightweight, easy-on design: For patients who already have trouble walking because of neuropathy, these shoes are light and easy to put on, making everyday movement a little easier.

Who Can Benefit from Diabetic Shoes?

Diabetic shoes are typically recommended for patients whose diabetes has led to complications or who are at higher risk for foot problems. You may be a good candidate if you have:

  • Nerve damage (neuropathy) or a loss of feeling in your feet

  • Poor circulation or a history of slow-healing wounds

  • Foot deformities such as bunions or hammer toes

  • A history of foot ulcers, or a high risk of developing them

  • Difficulty finding comfortable shoes that don’t rub or cause sores

Not sure whether diabetic shoes are right for you? That’s exactly what an evaluation with Dr. Ferro is for. We’ll look at your feet, talk through your history, and help you find what’s best for you.

How the Process Works

Getting fitted for diabetic shoes at Ferro Foot & Ankle is simple, and we handle the details with you:

  1. Come in for an evaluation: When a patient with diabetes is seen in our office, we check whether diabetic shoes are appropriate and whether you may qualify.

  2. We measure your feet: These aren’t custom-made shoes. Instead, we carefully measure your feet to find the right size and fit.

  3. You pick your style: You’ll choose from an assortment of options, including Velcro, laces, or laceless designs, based on what works best for you.

  4. We handle the paperwork: We send the appropriate paperwork to your primary care physician for approval. Once it’s completed and returned to us and your sizing is done, we order your shoes.

Does Insurance Cover Diabetic Shoes?

In many cases, yes. Diabetic shoes do require a prescription, and coverage depends on your plan. For Medicare patients, there are specific guidelines you’ll need to meet to qualify, and the approval requires collaboration between Dr. Ferro and your primary care physician, who must be a medical doctor (not a nurse practitioner or physician assistant).

It can sound like a lot, but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. Our team will walk you through what’s needed and coordinate with your physician’s office to help you get approved.

Available at Both of Our Locations
